Music at Southern
The music at Southern Local Schools is growing rapidly in quality and quantity. While Mr. Chad Dodson has been here for 9 years, his roles were numerous as he served as band director and general music teacher for the entire district. He has and is doing tremendous things with the band. Last year, the band made history in sweeping their class with 1st places at the Wahama White Falcon Invitational. They did the same this year and also tied for second place band in class at the Point Pleasant Battle of the Bands.
Notably, the band recently traveled to Indianapolis to perform in Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Indianapolis Colts for the Bands of America Grand National Championships. With marching season complete, the band is getting ready for its spring concert. This year, the band will be performing an extended concert. Half of the concert will feature popular music from film and rock bands, and the other half will be devoted to standard repertoire of the wind band.

This year the administration saw the need to hire another full-time music teacher to focus more on the elementary and middle school age groups. This new position not only allows Mr. Dodson more time to focus on the band but has also provided the opportunity students to have choir as a class at Southern. Mr. Darren Jackson began teaching in September. This additional faculty member makes it possible for students to have music on a more frequent basis. All K-3 students have music twice a week for at least two 9-week terms if not for three. This ensures a more defined foundation in music, on which students can build in their later years at Southern.
